Brown, Margaret Wise. GOODNIGHT MOON. HarperCollin's Children's Book Group, 2001. $12.95. ISBN 0694016756. A little bunny says goodnight to his room and to all of the familiar things in it. It is an ideal bedtime book.

Carle, Eric. THE VERY HUNGRY CATERPILLAR. Putnam Publishing Group, 1969. $19.99 ISBN 0399208534. A hungry caterpillar munches his way through a variety of foods on his way to becoming a butterfly.

Jeffers, Susan. BROTHER EAGLE, SISTER SKY: A MESSAGE FROM CHIEF SEATTLE. Puffin Book, Penguin Putnam Books for Young Readers, 2002. $7.99. ISBN 0142301329. Book is beautifully illustrated and though it bears little resemblance to the original speech by Chief Seattle, it does bring a warning and prophecy of the Native Americans belief in the unity of man and nature.

Keats, Ezra Jack. THE SNOWY DAY. Viking Press, 1962. $15.99. ISBN 0670654000. Contains wonderful illustrations using cut-outs, watercolors, and collage. A little boy, Peter, experiences the joys of a snowy day.

Martin, Jr., Bill. BROWN BEAR, BROWN BEAR, WHAT DO YOU SEE? Henry Holt Books for Young Readers, 1983. $15.95. ISBN 805002014. This is a great picture book that is full of rhyme and repetition and should appeal to pre-schoolers. A new animal is met on each page nudging the reader to continue to find out which animal will appear next. The pattern is repeated over and over, until the listener will be able to chime in with the reader easily predicting the next rhyme.

Pfister, Marcus. RAINBOW FISH. North-South Books, Inc., 1992. $18.88. ISBN 1558580107. Sparkling illustrations accompany this wonderful lesson on sharing.

Piper, Watty. THE LITTLE ENGINE THAT COULD. Penguin Putnam Book for Young Readers, 2002. $5.99. ISBN 0698118723. A classic story of optimistic thinking that has delighted children for generations. The refrain, ‘think I can’, is definitely the best feature of the story.

Scillian, Devin. A IS FOR AMERICA: AN AMERICAN ALPHABET. Sleeping Bear Press, 2001. $22.95. ISBN 1585360155. It is filled with delightful poems and beautiful illustrations. This book gives 26 reasons to be proud to be an American.

Taback, Simms. JOSEPH HAD A LITTLE OVERCOAT. Penguin Putnam Books for Young Readers, 1999. $15.99. ISBN 0670878553. This story is an adaptation of a Yiddish folk song telling a story of a farmer/tailor, who recycles his worn overcoat into ever-smaller items. This book contains beautiful illustrations.

Van Allsburg, Chris. THE POLAR EXPRESS. Houghton Mifflin Company, 1985. $18.95. ISBN 0395389496. A young boy takes a magical train ride to the North Pole on Christmas Eve to receive a special gift from Santa. Contains full color illustrations.

Just what the title suggests - a fine resource for family reading. It is especially valuable for singing families who are looking for new songs to enjoy together. A treat for the eye as well.

HERE COMES MOTHER GOOSE. Edited by I. Opie. Illustrated by Rosemary Wells. 1996. $21.99. ISBN 0763606839. Mother Goose with a twist of whimsy. If you have enjoyed the Max and Ruby books with the signature illustrations by Wells, you and your read-this-to-me-please crowd will love these updated versions of the Mother Goose rhymes.

AUDIO VISUALS

There are several sources for children's audio-visual materials. These include bookstores; music and video stores and on-line sources. Each year the American Library Association produces lists of notable recordings, videos and computer software. These lists can be found on-line at www.ala.org/alsc then click on Awards & Notables. Reviewing sources which may be found at public libraries include, School Library Journal; Publishers Weekly; Video Librarian. These publications include reviews of new audio-visual materials for children. In choosing audio-visual materials look for companies that produce quality materials for children.
