Privacy and Internet Tools

Spychecker is a registry of spyware. Check the software you’re downloading to see their privacy statements.
Spybot Search and Destroy looks for spyware and other problems on your computer. Use the fix button. Has download and usage directions. Won a PC Award in 2004.
Shields Up! for a free test of your computer’s vulnerability.
SpamCop offers information on spam and how to prevent it.
SpamBuster offers a free and cost version. It requires a POP3 email account such as provided from a local internet service provider and does not support proprietary email such as AOL , Compuserve, MSN, Juno, or web-based mail accounts such as Yahoo, or Hotmail.
Junkbusters: Get Guidescope to block banner ads.
Panicware offers free & cost versions of software to stop pop-up ads.
Surf in Peace is a free utility for PCs to stop unwanted ads.
Ad Aware will remove spyware and pop-up ads.

Update Windows from Microsoft. Works on all versions of Windows.
Netscape Navigator lets you upgrade your browser at no charge to the current edition.

McAfee is virus protection software and can be purchased online. Current subscribers can download updates or set the program for auto-update.

AVG is a new virus protection choice. They offer a free home version with less features. Click on products, choose free home version. Offers auto update.

Expert Help Sites and Shopping Advice

Protonic has free advice from volunteer tech support experts
Consumer Review claims to have “unbiased product reviews generated by other consumers like you.”
Epinions has reviews provided by consumers who’ve used the product.
Safe Shopping from the American Bar Association teaches a smarter, safer way to shop online.
PayPal allows anyone with an email address to send or receive payments online. Often used for auction sites.

Price Comparison Sites

Price comparison sites each work differently. Read the "about" statements on the site to see how they choose merchants and price comparisons. Also check to see if vendors pay a fee to be included. Some include shipping costs and other do not.
MySimon compares products and prices from around the web.
DealTime searches for the best deals and gives you a list of merchants and prices.
Pricescan searches merchants and lists the results in price order.
Price Grabber for all-around shopping comparisons.
BizRate is another comparison site
Esmarts also offers comparison shopping.
SalesCircular lets you check out the weekly ads for your area. Find out who's offering rebates and more.
