Search Directories

| Open Directory: 49,000+ volunteer editors select sites. Default is AND, accepts + - , accepts Boolean terms and, or, andnot (used as one word); not case sensitive; does not accept “phrase in quotes”; use * for truncation. Content is included in Google Directory so might be better way to search. |
| Yahoo: oldest & largest directory on the web; accepts almost any site submitted, no reviews or ratings; categories are considered the best. Default is AND, accepts + - , accepts Boolean AND, OR in caps but not consistant in applying, uses “phrase in quotes”; not case sensitive; has automatic truncation; sorted by relevance based on their system. Does some "behind the scenes" spell checking. Age of directory contributes to more dead links in retrieval. |

Case sensitive if the term in enclosed in quotes. Sorted by rank; offers translation service. Owned by Yahoo. |

| Gigablast debuted in 2002, not as large of some of the others. Default is OR; accepts + -; accepts Boolean operators AND, OR, AND NOT but must be in caps; allows “phrase searching”; no truncation; not case sensitive. |
| Google: one the largest engines, rated one of the best for all searches. Default is AND; accepts + - , allows “phrase in quotes”; accepts Boolean operator OR but must be in caps; not case sensitive; no truncation so you will have to use all forms of the word; sorts by relevance based on link popularity. Spell checking by asking "did you mean ..."? Type in the most important words first. Sample searches yield different results based on term order. Now offers Froogle which is a shopping search tool.

| HotBot: Completely redesigned in 2002. Now allows you to run search in
3 different search engines, Ask, Google, and MSN. Does not function like a meta search engine since it doesn’t combine results. Default is AND, can use “phrases in quotes”; boolean operators AND, OR, NOT allowed but must be in caps; case sensitive. Advanced search gives more options including filtering for “offensive content.” |
