Safeguard Your Privacy and Watch for Scams

Electronic Frontier Foundation “defends your online rights.”
Electronic Privacy Information Center focuses on civil rights issues and protecting privacy.
The Privacy Foundation has privacy news and advisories and reports on Internet privacy issues.
TRUSTe: Web sites displaying the TRUSTe Privacy Seal are committed to abiding by a privacy policy.
Privacy Rights Clearinghouse offers practical advice.
Privacy on the Net has information on Internet privacy issues.
National Fraud Watch posts alerts on Internet scams and offers valuable advice on how not to be a victim
Coalition Against Unsolicited Commercial Email is a nonprofit group. Check the site for more info.
Scambusters has current info on internet scams.
The Anti-Phishing Working Group (APWG) is an industry association focused on eliminating the identity theft and fraud that result from the growing problem of phishing and email spoofing.
Hoaxbuster, from the government, is the CIAC Internet Hoax and Chain Letter pages. In addition to describing hoaxes and chain letters found on the Internet, learn how to recognize and get rid of them.

Ad and Spam Blockers

Microsoft now offers Windows Defender as a free download. Works in real-time but you must have Windows 2000+.
Spychecker is a registry of spyware. Check the software you’re downloading to see their privacy statements.
Network Advertising Initiative explains how web sites use cookies. Offers the option to “opt out” of receiving unsolicited advertising
Junkbusters: Get Guidescope to block banner ads
Panicware offers free & cost versions of software to stop pop-up ads.
Safer-networking offers Spybot, which is privacy software.
Shields Up! for a free test of your computer’s vulnerability
Surf in Peace is a free utility for PCs to stop unwanted ads.
Bugnosis free utility to find out who’s tracking you on the web and more. Reveal Web Bugs.
SpamCop offers information on spam and how to prevent it.
SpamBuster offers a free and cost version. It requires a POP3 email account such as provided from a local internet service provider and does not support proprietary email such as AOL , Compuserve, MSN, Juno, or web-based mail accounts such as Yahoo, or Hotmail.
Spamotomy claims to help you find the right anti-spam tool and help cut unwanted e-mail.
Lavasoftware offers Ad-Aware to get rid of ads.

Browser Updates & Virus Protection Software

Update Windows from Microsoft. Works on all versions of Windows.
Netscape Navigator lets you upgrade your browser at no charge to the current edition.
Mozilla Firefox browser is a new player in the browser market. Claims to stop spyware and pop-ups. Free download.
Microsoft Internet Explorer lets you upgrade your browser at no charge to the current edition.
McAfee is one choice for virus protections software and can be purchased online. You can also download new virus definitions if you have a current subscription.
Symantec is another choice and can also be purchased online. This is the Norton Antivirus program. You can also download new virus definitions if you have a current subscription.
AVG is a new virus protection choice. They offer a free home version with less features. Click on products, choose free home version. Offers auto update.
Avast! is another free (for home use) virus protection choice.

Downloads and Plug-ins

Adobe Acrobat is needed to print many documents from sites. You should have the latest version, updates are free.
RealPlayer is just one of many music plug-ins. If you have a sound card and speakers, get ready to hear live music.
Tucows offers shareware and more.
Download.com is another source for freeware and shareware.
JUMBO for big-time downloads.
Netshareware is a shareware “supercenter”.
Quicktime from Apple offers a free viewer that will allow you to watch movie trailers and more on your computer.
