About.com is great starting point for beginners on genealogy. Offers site reviews, newsletters, census resources, and a great collection of research sites for kids.
Cyndi’s List of Genealogy Links on the Internet is a terrific source of links to over 262,000+ genealogy related sites. Organized by categories.
GeneaNet: Genealogical Database Network’s mission is to set up a universal register of the world’s genealogical resources.
Genealogy Home Page is a directory of genealogy links.
Genealogy Today has hundreds of articles on a variety of family history topics, a community of amateur and professional genealogists, plus a store.
Helm's Genealogy Toolbox includes a categorized list of genealogical links, software profiles, search engines, digitized images, how-to articles, queries, and genealogical news stories.
Genealogy.com is a commercial site but it has a good selection of beginner’s information and a list of online resources.
Access Genealogy is a useful starting place and a source of data. Good Native American collection.

Government and Association Sources 

Social Security Death Index. Find obituaries, cemetery records, locate a death certificate, or track down probate records.
Death Indexes is a directory of online death indexes listed by state, including death certificate indexes, obituaries, cemetery burials and probate records.
US Vital Record Information. How to obtain vital records from each state.
Child Welfare (was National Adoption Information Clearinghouse) is a comprehensive resource on all aspects of adoption, foster care, etc.
Census Online provides links to U.S. and Canadian census information broken down by county or province.
The Genealogy Page from the National Archives.
National Genealogy Society. Membership, events, charts, forms, conferences.
American Family Immigration History Center has a searchable database on the 22 million immigrants who arrived at Ellis Island between 1898-1924. Free registration.
Church of the Latter Day Saints. Browse records of census, property records, voting registration, and more. Also can build a starter family tree.
Library of Congress has history and photos too.
Allen County Library Genealogy Department. Source of local genealogical information plus links to other sites of interest.
Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System. Computerized database with information about Civil War both Union and Confederate.
World GenWeb Project is a non-profit, volunteer based organization dedicated to providing genealogical and historical records and resources for world-wide access!
US GenWeb Project pulls together all of the states’ genealogy web sites. Terrific source for genealogy.
Michigan GenWeb is Michigan’s part of the US GenWeb.

Michigan Sources

Michigan Polonia, by local genealogist Ceil Jensen, is an excellent resource.
Making of Modern Michigan includes local history materials from communities around the state. Michigan's unique heritage is represented through photographs, family papers, oral histories, genealogical materials, and much more.
Michigan Electronic Library offers resources for genealogists including state resources and "how-to's". The Michigan Newspaper Project can also be useful for genealogists.
Mt. Clemens Public Library. Guide to genealogy sources. Also has some specific sources for Macomb County.
Sterling Heights Genealogical Society
Macomb County Death Records. Local source for death records.
Draft Registration Index for Macomb County, MI. Compiled by librarian Kristy Taormina from National Archives microfilm of 7,243 draft registration cards for Macomb County. Includes information on men of Macomb County who were between ages 18-45 during World War I, even if they never served in the military. The site includes a more detailed explanation of the nature of the records, as well as an image of a sample draft registration card.

Rootsweb Data Cooperative. Purpose is to make large volumes of data available to online researches at minimal cost. Home of the Roots-L-Surname list and databases. Also has free access to Social Security Death Index and other files.
Deciphering old handwriting.
Genealogy Gateway acts as a gateway to further information. Click on the gateway you need and follow the links.
Gensource provides databases to assist with research online. Features I Found It & Common Threads.
Genealogy on the Web links including newsgroups, state and country information.
Olive Tree Genealogy Useful to find ancestors who traveled by ship. Also offers a database of lists to other resources.
CousinConnect is a great source for hooking up with other genealogists and distant cousins researching your family.
City Directories of the USA attempts to identify all city directories for the US and where they’re held.
Caleb Johnson's Mayflower Web. The site lists passengers who came to the New World in the 1620's on the Mayflower, the Fortune and the Anne.

Cemetery and Obituary Help

Cemetery Internment Lists. Use to find gravesites of ancestors.
FuneralNet. Search for U.S. funeral homes.
ObitFinder has more than a million recent obits from U.S. and Canada. Search by newspaper name.
Obituary Central has thousands of links to online obituaries and other notices. Also has search engines for obits.
Find a Grave is a guide to find “where everybody who was anybody is buried.”
