Gardening Directories and Search Tools

Gardening Launch Pad has over 4500 gardening links, 95% of them non-commercial, and articles.
GardenWeb offers links to gardening sites and has one of the largest web forums. Also has a garden exchange where gardeners can post requests for seeds and plants, as well as offer "trades". Offers guides to gardens around the world.
About.com for gardening, edited by Deborah Simpson, has articles and a huge index on gardening.
Cyndi’s Catalog of Catalogs leads to over 1900 mail order gardening catalogs.
Websbestgardening: Collection of gardening links, most commercial, but also some with advice and links to others. Divided by type of garden or equipment.
WebRing: Browse or search the Ring directory for gardening sites. Webring consists of more than 60,000 Rings and 1,000,000 Sites.
Gardener’s Network is a gardening community for the family. You are encouraged to ask questions, etc.
Garden Portal links to sites that cover all aspects of gardening. Some are commercial but do offer info and advice.
GardenHere is an Internet community for home gardeners and neighborhood garden clubs.

Gardening Information Sites

You may need to download a player to take advantage of videos on some gardening sites. Try the Quick Time Player or the Windows Media Player. Just follow the directions.
MSU Cooperative Extension Service from Michigan State for local information. Also tells what extension services are available at what cost.
Plants Database provides information on all types of plants growing in the U.S. Search by common name, look at more than 16,000 high res pictures, and print plant guides.
Farmer's Almanac, besides predicting planting weather, you can check out the gardening tips.
Botany.com offers a plant encyclopedia by common names. Each entry has a thorough description along with planting information. Covers plants, herbs, shrubs, and more.
Gardenguides offers a well-organized menu with flower, vegetable and herb guides. Includes articles and discussion boards.
Webgarden, from Ohio State University, provides a resource for all gardeners.
Backyard Gardener is a "backyard information source" offering information on any type of garden you can think of from perennial to water gardens.
Botanique provides links to over 2300 botanical gardens, lists gardening events, and links to organizations, forums, etc. Well organized site.
Yardcare.com is a good basic lawn care site with grass information, a glossary, pests, and maintenance info.
Weed Images, from Rutgers, shows the weed and how to control it. Features "New Jersey" weeds but most can be found in Michigan too, unfortunately!
National Pesticide Information Center is a cooperative effort of Oregon State U and EPA. Offers "objective, science-based information about a wide variety of pesticide-related subjects."
The Pesticide Action Network Database is "your one-stop location for current toxicity and regulatory information for pesticides."
Perry's Perennial Pages offers perennial and related horticultural information and links. From the University of Vermont.

"Specialty"  Gardening Sites

Terrarium Resource Guide from the Terrarium Builders Guild has everything you need to know.
Bonsai Web has info for beginners, pictures, discussion forums, and a useful collection of links.
Howard Garrett’s Basic Organic Program will teach you the basic principles of organic gardening.
The North American Rock Garden Society encourages the study and cultivation of wildflowers that grow well among rocks.
The Butterfly Site is a source for information on butterfly gardening with links to societies and FAQs.
Square Foot Gardening: The official site of Mel Bartholomew, originator and author. Lots of free advice too.
MasterComposter has links to composting sites as well as tips on getting started, sources for composting supplies, a message board, FAQs, and even composting courses!
Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center exists to educate people about the "the environmental necessity, economic value, and natural beauty of native plants."
Coleus Finder is devoted to every variety known of coleus.
Edible Landscaping lists “every perennial plant that is worth growing for the sake of its produce.”

Gardening:  Commercial Sites and Online Catalogs

Garden Watchdog: Come here for consumer reviews of over 2,400 mail-order plant and seed companies, most with links to the web sites.
Do It Yourself Network: Use the gardening link. Find hot projects, a project index, and a guide to the TV shows.
Home & Garden Television is the online version of the popular TV station.
Burpee: Of course, you can go shopping but the site also offers tips and lots of flower pictures.
White Flower Farm offers more than 500 varieties of flowers, vegetables and herbs online.
Homegrown Hydroponics. You don’t need to be in space to appreciate this form of water gardening. This site from Canada will get you started.
Gardeners.com is a gardeners supply company. Need a pair of splogs? You can get them here.
Waysidegardens: This South Carolina-based garden catalog is in a class by itself. Expect more than 700 flowering perennials and more. Sensibly organized by sun/shade preference, etc.
Plant Delights Nursery is a mail order nursery specializing in new and rare perennials. Also offers the Plant Delights Education Center to learn about new plants and garden techniques.
Organic Gardening is a source for commercial products but does offer information and tips on the web site.
Greenhouse Gardener's Companion is for people with an interest in home greenhouses. Offers how-to’s and where to get supplies.

Gardening Online Magazines

Capital Area Koi and Water Gardening Club based in Michigan offers links and plenty of advice and pictures.
Rain Gardens of Western Michigan offers information on this new ecological idea. Has videos and more.
National Gardening Association Online Magazine is a great source for all kinds of gardening information.
You Grow Girl is the "indie rock" of plant sites. Check out the journals, forums, and some unusual gardening tips.

Gardening with Children

Junior Master Gardener programs.
National Garden Association offers a parents primer, greenhouses, and more. Special part just for kids.
