About.com is a great resource for computer basics, terminology guides, and more. Just choose computing & technology. There is also an informative section on viruses.
Secrets of Taming Computers offers tips and techniques for beginners.
Jan's Illustrated Computer Literacy 101 comes from a college professor and has lots of illustrations.
Seniors Can, from Canada, offers a basic training module on buying and using computers. Includes a glossary.
Keyboard Shortcuts from Microsoft helps save time and effort and provides an essential tool for people with dexterity difficulties and impairments.
PC Pitstop gathers PC news, warnings, virus updates and more.
SeniorNet is an online community and technology trainer for older adults.

Buying Advice and Technical Help

Consumer Review claims to have “unbiased product reviews generated by other consumers like you.”
Dave's Guides is done by a MSU professor and offers advice on buying computer equipment
Google Groups has discussion groups on dozens of topics including computers.
Epinions has reviews provided by consumers who’ve used the product.

Browsers and Virus Software

Update Windows from Microsoft. Works on all versions of Windows.
Netscape Navigator lets you upgrade your browser at no charge to the current edition.
Microsoft Internet Explorer lets you upgrade your browser at no charge to the current edition.
Mozilla Firefox browser is a new player in the browser market. Claims to stop spyware and pop-ups. Free download.
McAfee is virus protection software and can be purchased online. Current subscribers can download updates or set the program for auto-update.
Symantec Symantec, from Norton, is also a virus protection program that can be purchased online. Current subscribers can download updates or set the program for auto-update.
AVG is a new virus protection choice. They offer a free home version with less features. Click on products, choose free home version. Offers auto update.

Software and Plug-ins

Adobe Acrobat is needed to print many documents from sites. You should have the latest version, updates are free.
RealPlayer is just one of many music plug-ins. If you have a sound card and speakers, get ready to hear live music.
Tucows offers shareware and more.
JUMBO for big-time downloads.
Netshareware is a shareware “supercenter”.
Quicktime from Apple offers a free viewer that will allow you to watch movie trailers and more on your computer. Works on Windows too!

Shopping for Computers Online

Try the web sites of the various computer companies. They will often have comparison charts on different models and more. A few of the larger companies are listed here, use a search tool to find other manufacturers. Also, you might want to check the sites of local electronic stores for coupons, deals, etc.
